CHAPTER SEVEN

Chelsea awoke that morning with a million worries in her mind. Someone had tried to ruin Steve’s life, and she had no idea who. The only real suspects were Mark and Steiner, though it seemed beyond their capabilities. It could have been someone trying to break Steve and Jackie up or someone trying to get Steve kicked off the hockey team.

“You have to figure out why they posted the video. Then you’ll figure out who posted it,” Nanners texted her that morning as they discussed the “case.” This was just like solving a crime in Phoenix Wright or any of the other visual novels she enjoyed. She didn’t have much evidence to go on and no suspects to interrogate, though talking to Steve at school might give her some clues. The only thing she really had to go on was the brief footage of the tape she had seen and the fact Jackie had messaged Steve the moment it went up. It was hard to believe Jackie would do something that would cause them both so much trouble, but she had solved enough video game mysteries to never rule anyone out, no matter how unlikely a culprit they were. This also meant Steve was a suspect.

How would Steve react when she approached him at school and told him she deleted the video? If he really wanted to post it, he could have just posted it again. He could have posted it in the heat of the moment or on accident, and that meant he would be relieved to find out no one saw it. Overall, it could prove risky approaching him if he was indeed the culprit, but if she wanted to solve this case, she would inevitably have to talk to him.

She also needed to commit to memory any clues she could remember from the video. The camera was stationary, which meant no one was helping them record. No one acknowledged the camera before she stopped the video, meaning it could have been candid. Either they were recorded in secret, or one of them had recorded without the other’s knowledge, fueling the theory this was some kind of revenge. Unfortunately, this theory of events lined up with the threat Jackie had made immediately after the video went up. But the threat would have been reasonable if Jackie believed Steve was posting revenge porn.

Steve, Steiner, and Jackie were all suspects, and none of them could be ruled out. It was also entirely possible she didn’t know the perpetrator at all. At this point in the investigation, her only true course of action was talking to Steve.

Chelsea arrived at school, and nothing immediately seemed out of the ordinary. It was impossible to tell if the video had spread among the students. She continued to monitor Steve’s Facebook from the inside, and as far as she could tell, no one had actually seen the tape, only receiving a notification about it. Steve was the first person she needed to talk to, but she had no idea where to find him.
